What is this drug and what is it used for?
SMOFlipid as a milky-colored solution in a 250 mililiter bottle is an intravenous lipid emulsion providing essential fatty acids for patients who cannot meet their nutritional needs orally. It contains four oils: 30% Soybean oil that provides essential fatty acids, 30% Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) which are source of rapidly available energy, 25% Olive oil to supply of monounsaturated fatty acids, and 15% Fish oil (omega-3) source of EPA and DHA, with optimal Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio, along with vitamin E as of an antioxidant. This product can be administered alongside amino acid and carbohydrate formulas.
It supports daily energy and essential fatty acid requirements, improves liver function, helps control serum triglyceride levels, and reduces hospitalization duration.
In neonates, it closely resembles human breast milk and supports neurological and retinal development.
How is this drug given?
SMOFlipid is administered intravenously, either alone or alongside amino acid and carbohydrate solutions. Dosage in adults is 5-10 ml/kg BW/day, up to a maximum of 15 ml/kg BW/day. Initial dose in neonates is 2.5-5 ml/kg BW/day that gradually as tolerated (0.5-1 g/kg BW/day) be increased to 3 g/kg BW/day. Infusion rate is 0.63 ml/kg BW/hour, with a maximum rate of 0.75 mL/kg BW/hour.
