What is this drug and what is it used for?
Intralipid is an intravenous lipid emulsion used to provide essential fatty acids and calories for patients who cannot meet their nutritional needs orally.
How is this drug given?
• Administered intravenously via peripheral or central vein.
• Start at 1 ml/min for the first 15–30 minutes; if tolerated, increase to 2 ml/min.
• Maximum first-day volume: 500 ml.
• Adults: Up to 2.5 g/kg/day (~25 ml/kg)
• Children and infants: 0.5–4 g/kg/day (age and clinical condition-dependent)
• Premature/low birth weight neonates: Start 0.5–1 g/kg/day, increase to 2 g/kg/day with close monitoring.
• Total caloric intake should not exceed 60% from fat emulsions.
