Founded in 1668, Merck is the world's oldest pharmaceutical, chemical and life sciences company headquartered in Darmstadt. The founding family remains the majority owner of the publicly listed corporate group. Merck, Darmstadt, Germany holds the global rights to the Merck name and brand. The only exceptions are the United States and Canada, where the company operates as EMD Serono, MilliporeSigma and EMD Performance Materials.

The Biopharma business of Merck, is pursuing activities in selected indications for highly specialized therapeutic areas mainly treated by specialists. The portfolio includes leading biopharmaceutical drugs that benefit patients who suffer from colorectal cancer, head and neck tumors or multiple sclerosis. In addition, the business offers therapies to treat infertility, growth disorders, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and thyroid diseases. 

Research and development are focused on the fields of oncology, immuno-oncology, neurodegenerative diseases, fertility, endocrinology and biosimilar.
